I'd like to invite you to be part of Feel The Force Day, taking place at Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday 5th September.
Feel The Force Day isn't just another convention.
It is the world's only fully accessible film and TV convention, created especially for disabled people and adults with learning disabilities. Every year hundreds of costumers from across the UK give their time to help create an experience that many of our visitors simply can't get anywhere else.
For some people, this is the biggest day of their year.
For others, it's the only event they'll attend.
What makes Feel The Force Day different is that accessibility isn't something we've added on. It's the reason the event exists.
One of the most powerful parts of the day happens quietly.
A blind visitor reaches out and feels Darth Vader's helmet for the very first time.
Someone discovers how huge a Stormtrooper really is.
A child who has only ever heard Doctor Who on television finally understands what the TARDIS, a Dalek or the Doctor actually look like.
Years ago I worked with a blind colleague who listened to Star Wars every single day. He knew every line, every piece of music and every sound effect.
Yet he had no idea what Darth Vader actually looked like.
He didn't know how tall he was.
He didn't know what his helmet felt like.
He didn't know what a droid looked like.
That conversation completely changed the way I thought about accessibility.
At Feel The Force Day, our visitors don't just look at costumes.
They explore them.
They discover different materials, textures, armour, capes, masks and props through touch. They begin to build a picture of characters they've loved for years but have never truly been able to experience.
One of our regular visitors, Jimmy, who is both deaf and blind, spent time feeling the original Jabba the Hutt faceplate. It suddenly helped him understand the enormous size of the character and how so many puppeteers worked together to bring him to life.
Moments like that happen all day.
That is why your costume matters.
We're proud to welcome every genre.
Star Wars.
Marvel.
DC.
Doctor Who.
Ghostbusters.
Disney.
Gaming.
Anime.
Horror.
Science fiction.
Fantasy.
If someone loves the character, we want them to have the chance to experience it.
We're looking for high quality costumes and passionate people who understand that, for one day, they aren't simply wearing a costume.
They're helping someone experience a character for the first time.
Many of our visitors will ask permission to touch parts of your costume. This isn't about taking photographs.
It's about learning.
Understanding.
Making film and television accessible in a way that simply isn't possible anywhere else.
You'll be looked after throughout the day with complimentary food and drinks, there is no admission charge for costumers, and you'll become part of one of the most rewarding events you'll ever attend.
Many costumers tell us they arrive expecting to entertain people.
They leave feeling like they've changed someone's life.
